The time has finally come! With the warm season fast approaching, it’s no secret that we are all eager to hop on our bike and take it for a spin. If you haven’t ridden your bicycle since last year, it is imperative to tune it up before hitting the road again. In order to start the biking season on the right track, here are 10 key factors to go over.

MAINTAINING YOUR BIKE IN TEN EASY STEPS

  1. CHECK THE AIR PRESSURE OF YOUR TIRES

Even if the bike is unused over a period of time, the tires will inevitably deflate. You should invest in a quality air pump that has a wide base to stand on and large, easy-to-read pressure gauges. For optimal tire quality, follow the air pressure level recommended by the tire manufacturer.

  1. IS THE REAR WHEEL TIGHTLY SECURED?

To ensure safety, the rear wheel must be tightly adjusted and the quick-released lever fully closed. You should note that not all bikes have quick-release levers. If yours is not, ensure the bolts located on both sides of the wheel are secure.

  1. CHECK THE TENSION OF THE SPOKES

A properly tensioned wheel spokes will ride better and last longer. Pinch each of them with your finger. The sound of each spoke should be very similar. If the tension is off, use a spoke wrench to tighten it at its base. Be careful not to overtighten.

  1. ARE THE BRAKE PADS FLAT?

The brake pads should rest flat on the rim of the wheel. If that is not the case, use an Allen key to tighten the block in the correct position and to activate the brake. Then, check both brakes by pushing the bike forward and backward.

  1. CHECK YOUR BRAKE LEVERS

If the brake lever pulls against the handlebar grip, you’ll need to readjust the brake cable. If that becomes the case, you can quickly fix this issue by loosening the brake cable’s anchor bolt, pull the cable in order to tighten it and finally, secure it be retightening the anchor bolt.

A good rule of thumb is that both sides of the brake mechanism must move when the brake is applied. If it fails, you will have to turn the small adjustment screw on the stationary side until the brake mechanism moves again.

  1. CHECK YOUR DERAILLEURS

With the bike upside down, shift the gears while spinning the pedals. By doing so, you will be able to see if the gears reach the shift points smoothly and slightly adjust the front and rear derailleurs in order the keep the chain centered on each gear.

  1. IS THE CHAIN IS GOOD CONDITION?

Being the key component of your bike, it is important to keep your chain in pristine condition. A rusty chain will damage the gears and other parts of your bike. Before going on a bike ride, use a specific lubricant to smooth out any kinks and remove residue on the chain. If needed, you should also replace worn links or pins before hitting the road.

  1. CHECK THE STEM

Check that the front wheel and stem do not move independently of each other and that the handlebar clamp bolts are tight. You can verify this being standing in front of the bike while holding the front wheel between your knees and turning the handlebars. With the help of an Allen key, you will prevent any movement by tightening the steam and handlebar clamp bolts.

  1. IS THE BIKE SEAT TIGHTLY FIXED?

Before starting the biking season, ensure you check your bike seat. See that your seat post is not loose. If that is the case, use an Allen key to tighten the seat post clamp. Furthermore, if the cover is worn and the springs are exposed, might be the perfect time to replace it.

  1. IS YOUR BIKE SAFELY EQUIPPED?

Safety first! Before each bike rides, check the condition and batteries of your lights and reflectors. If you don’t have front and rear lights, now’s the time to head to the store and invest in some. It is absolutely imperative that you make yourself visible while being on the road.

By regularly performing this essential list of checkups, not only you will ensure the longevity of your bike, but will also avoid any potential damages and will prevent accidents.
